P5 trip to Oakwood Bushcraft πŸŒΏπŸ¦‡πŸ•Έ

23rd Jun 2023

P5 had the most wonderful time with Tony at Oakwood Bushcraft yesterday. They started off by being split into three teams to play some team building and warm up games. They stayed in their teams and conducted a scavenger hunt to find all the different birds that Tony had hidden throughout the forest. He awarded points if the teams were able to correctly identify all the species.  After that each team was tasked to build a shelter using only natural resources such as tree branches and sticks. They all did such an amazing job that each team was awarded equal points. Following that Tony showed them all how to start a fire using flint and steel. There was a competition for the person that could start a fire the fastest with a whooping 100 points for the winner. After all that hard work we stopped for a lovely outdoor lunch. To continue their new found fire lighting skills Tony demonstrated how to use a Kelly Kettle to make Nettle Tea. Each team was tasked with gathering long, dry twigs and sticks to make a fire in the inner chamber of the kettle. Once they got the fire started in the kettle they had to work very hard as team to keep the fire alight long enough for the nettles to brew. A lot of the children enjoyed the flavour of the tea and even said they would make it again. As a special treat Tony’s wife Debbie gave each child a marshmallow to toast over the fire and two chocolate digestives which they put together to make S’mores. They were absolutely delicious!!

The day ended with an amazing archery session. Each child had three attempts and the person with the highest score overall won extra points for their team. After counting all the points Tony awarded a trophy to the winning team. We are all so thankful to Tony and Debbie for creating the most wonderful day filled with fun, laughter and exciting activities.
